Job description

We are very happy to be recruiting for our client, Prison Custody Officers, for their prison in Bridgend, South Wales.  The position is full time and permanent following successful completion of probation.

Working within a prison/YOI isn't easy and can present new challenges on a daily basis, but also can be very rewarding.  As a Prison Custody Officer, you will play a crucial part in caring for over 1,400 prisoners in a  safe and decent conditions.  You will have get a chance to work with 15 year old children, older teenagers and adults from aged 21 to OAP's

Although experience of working within a prison setting is in some ways an advantage, it is not essential.  We are looking for people that can use their transferable skills from previous experiences.  Although there are no formal qualifications, basic literacy and numeracy skills are needed and ideally an NVQ3 in Custodial Care Assessor Award, but you will have the opportunity to work towards this.  You will have good communication skills and be resilient.  Have flexibility to work various shifts over a 7 day period taking into account that this is a service which has to be covered 24/7.  You'll be able to cope in a pressured and disciplined environment and be a strong team player.  you'll have the ability to remain calm and support people from all walks of life some with complex backgrounds, in a non judgemental, mature manner and have a professional disposition and integrity.  This is can be a very challenging role but also very rewarding. You will be fully trained in restraint and all mandatory training before you work within the prison setting.  

As a PCO you will be helping assist with resettlement opportunities, by properly preparing prisoners who some, eventually are set to be release from custody.  In addition to your custodial duties, you'll build and maintain dynamic secure relationships with prisoners , help and support them with any issues they may be experiencing.
